The Next Houseboat Hirers Association & Mid Murray Council Annual Houseboat Open Days at Mannum - will be held on 7 & 8 May 2011.

This popular event is a great way to discover the benefits of taking a houseboat holiday, as well as a fun day out for the whole family. Boats ranging in size from two to twelve berth will be on show, and houseboat owners will be on-hand to answer questions and help holiday-makers plan their itineraries.

Craft stalls, amusements for the kids and an alfresco dining area will also be available, and a free shuttle bus between the car parking area and Mannum Reserve will be operating.

CEO of the Houseboat Hirers Association (HHA) Peter Tucker said the Mannum Houseboat Open Days was a great introduction to taking a houseboat holiday, enabling visitors to identify the ideal boat for their needs and to research the huge variety of vessels currently operating.

"South Australia is home to the best houseboats in the country, and many people are amazed at how luxurious and well-appointed they are," he said.

"The majority of boats have separate bathrooms, fully-equipped kitchens, TV and video equipment, are comfortably furnished and sun-decks, making them a home away from home and the ideal holiday accommodation.

"People are also pleasantly surprised when we explain how easy it is to drive a houseboat – all you need is a driver's license and you're on your way."

Mr Tucker said more and more people were opting for a houseboat holiday, as it is the ideal way to relax with family and friends, and extremely cost-effective.

"What could be better than slowly cruising down the River Murray, passing majestic gum trees and spectacular cliffs, before mooring for the night and enjoying a riverside BBQ," Mr Tucker said.

"It's one of the most relaxing types of holiday on offer, and because of the range of activities available – watersports, bushwalks and visits to heritage towns – it's ideal for all ages, budgets and tastes.

"Many people also love the fact that houseboat holidays are extremely easy to organise – all you need to take is food, drinks, a few good books and personal items.

"And you can hire a houseboat for a few days or a few weeks – the options are endless."

The Houseboat Hirer's Association and Mid Murray Council Open Days will be held on May 7 and 8 between 10am and 5pm at the beautiful Mary-Ann Reserve at Mannum and entry is free.
